He insisted easing of restrictions will come in “grandmother steps” — and he will not hesitate to slam on the brakes if the infection rate starts to rise.

In a video call with 100 backbench Tory MPs, the PM confirmed full Commons sittings would resume on June 2.

An MP in on the call said: “Boris told us he is determined that the country should be as close to normality again before the end of July.

“But he was clear that is all depends on the country meeting the conditions that have been set for tackling the virus.

“Most importantly that means bringing down the infection rate – and that can only be achieved if the continues to obey the rules on social distancing to help stop it spreading.”

Mr Johnson is planning a major speech including plans to kickstart growth with major infrastructure projects — such as Northern Powerhouse rail and broadband, plus education reforms.

Despite the lockdown costing £2.5billion a day, he assured MPs that he would not order a return of austerity to pay off the debt.

He was in good spirits as he fielded questions on a host of issues from MPs in their constituencies.

But he scoffed at suggestions his new “stay alert” catchphrase had caused confusion and insisted most people get it.

An MP said: “Boris was clear the voters aren’t at all confused by that message.

"There is a lot of support out there for what we are doing.

“If that support continues there’s every chance he will meet his ambition of lifting the restrictions still further in July.

"We have to keep repeating our message so that the public can help us to achieve that.”
