In a clip that later went viral, Floyd could be seen facedown telling Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin, "I can't breathe", as Chauvin knelt on his neck.

Floyd died a short time later after suffering what police called a "medical incident", sparking a wave of demonstrations in cities around the country.

Video from a protest in Seattle shows a young girl with her eyes closed crying and appearing to writhe in pain.

A number of protesters try to comfort her while one pours milk onto her face.

The girl had reportedly been pepper-sprayed by police.

Additional footage showed a protester moving along a line of officers asking whether any of them had been responsible.

CITYWIDE CURFEW

A stretch of northbound Interstate 5 was forced to close for a number of hours after a march spilled onto part of the road.

Photos taken in the downtown area showed windows broken in, buildings graffitied, and cars that had been set ablaze.

Police arrested at least 27 people over the day on suspicion of assault, arson, and looting, and other offences.

Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best said in a statement that no police used their firearms, but there were "countless uses of non-lethal and crowd control tools".

As well as pepper-spray, police are reported to have used flash bangs and tear gas.
