Prince Charles also marked the big event, sending his congratulations, and marked the event by posting an old black and white photograph.

The Duke of Edinburgh turned 99 yesterday — and the Queen wore a heart-shaped diamond brooch for his birthday portrait.

The couple, married for 72 years, have been together for the past 12 weeks at Windsor Castle after the Duke left his home at Sandringham, Norfolk, for the lockdown.

It is thought Prince Philip will spend part of today on video calls to friends and family as the royal couple continue their quarantine.

The Queen’s brooch is one of a number of stones cut from the famous 3,106-carat Cullinan — the largest gem-quality diamond ever found, mined in South Africa.

But the only bling for Philip was gold buttons on his blazer.

The Duke was born in 1921 on Corfu into the Greek and Danish royal families, but his family were exiled when he was a child.

In April, classy Prince Philip came out of retirement to show his support for Britain with a moving public statement.

The Duke Of Edinburgh delivered a heartfelt thank you to key workers who are keeping the country going throughout the pandemic.

Philip, who retired from public duties in 2017, thanked Britain’s key workers in his statement.

He said: “As we approach World Immunisation Week, I wanted to recognise the vital and urgent work being done by so many to tackle the pandemic.

“By those in the medical and scientific professions, at universities and research institutions, all united in working to protect us from Covid-19.

"On behalf of those of us who remain safe and at home, I also wanted to thank all key workers who ensure the infrastructure of our life continues.

“The staff and volunteers working in food production and distribution, those keeping postal and delivery services going, and those ensuring the rubbish continues to be collected.”
