Vodafone worker jumped to his death from seventh floor Coq d’Argent restaurant in the City after typing ‘I have cracked’ into his phone

He is the SIXTH person to take death plunge from rooftop terrace but restaurant insists it is safe

A VODAFONE employee typed “I have cracked” on his mobile phone before leaping to his death at one of London's most notorious suicide spots.

Michael Halligan, 29, became the SIXTH person to die at the Coq d'Argent restaurant after hurling himself from the seventh floor, a court heard.

Tourist Fabian Graimann saw the Dubliner jump from the rooftop brasserie near Bank tube station 'without hesitation' as he passed below on a walking tour.

Ironically, the tourists had been discussing notorious suicide spots in the area when Mr Halligan plunged to his death.

Mr Graimann said: “I could see him fall towards the ground.

“As he hit the ground my view was obstructed by a bus in traffic.”

He rushed to help police officers at the scene, but Mr Halligan had suffered fatal injuries to his skull.

The Irishman left draft messages on his phone in French and English which read: “I'm bored of life and even the future possibilities disinterest me, nobody's fault, nothing could be done to change it.”

Two messages read: “I no longer try to adapt myself to others.

“I'm not made for this world. I have cracked.”

Mr Halligan arrived in London on 16 January during a short break from his home in Stuttgart, where he was studying a business computing degree.

The next day he went to Coq d'Argent alone at around 2.50pm and ordered food before heading out to the terrace at around 4pm.

The sales rep was accidentally photographed sitting alone behind diners before he went outside to climb over a two-metre fence and jump to his death.

Food blogger Wilkes McDermid, 39, tweeted his final meal at Coq D'Argent before leaping to his death in February 2015.

Mr McDermid blamed his view that white women were not attracted to Asian men for his decision to jump.

South African banker Nico Lambrechts, 46, jumped from the rooftop terrace in October 2012 while experiencing 'enormous pressure' from his job.

British Library manager Rena Begum, 29, committed suicide at the same spot in September 2012 after a Facebook stalker hurled abuse at her for her westernised lifestyle.

City of London health and safety officers and Coroner Dr Roy Palmer have visited the restaurant, which is said to meet all legal requirements of health and safety.

The court was also told the restaurant has gone to 'great lengths' to prevent suicides, installing a two-metre high wall and keeping security staff stationed near the terrace at all times.

Recording a conclusion of suicide, Dr Palmer said: “'I think if you jump off a roof in that way having left those messages I don't think there can be any doubt about it.”

Members of Mr Halligan's family were present at City of London Coroners' Court.
