TV star Robson Green rescues elderly man who fell 60ft down a cliff
Witnesses claim he was like a 'real life action hero' but he says locals deserve all the credit
LOVERAT TV presenter Robson Green turned real-life hero yesterday when he helped rescue an elderly man who fell 60ft down a cliff.
The TV star, who last month shacked up with the wife of a vicar after she left her husband for him, was filming in the picturesque village of Clovelly, North Devon, on Wednesday afternoon when he was alerted to the emergency involving the 73 year-old.
Locals said the 51-year-old was the first on the scene of the drama with four local men on Wednesday afternoon.
Sharon King, who lives in the village, said: "Robson was on scene first with four local men, they all went down over the cliff.
"He came back up to phone the coastguard whilst our village boys cut the man free from the brambles.
"The man had taken a very wrong turn up the woods he was confused and has the onset of dementia.
"The coastguard was next to arrive then the helicopter. The man was ok after being airlifted."
Another local said Robson "had no thought for himself" as he clambered down the cliff to aid the pensioner, who had become trapped in brambles.
Two other men helped cut him free, before a coastguard rescue helicopter arrived to airlift him to safety. The man is understood to have only sustained minor injuries.
Details of the heroic rescue, which happened on Wednesday at 3.30pm, have emerged from plasterer Adam Beani who was walking down a hill in Independent Street when a woman said she could hear a male voice shouting for help.
The 34-year-old said: “I could hear the voice but I couldn’t see where it was coming from until I climbed down the bank and saw an elderly man caught up in some nettles.
“I was half way down the cliff when I got a tap on the shoulder and Robson Green was stood behind me.
"I recognised him straight away and he said, ‘I will take this one’.
“We scrambled down to the man, and Robson climbed through the nettles, hotly pursued by me.
"I was like his sidekick.
“When we reached the man he was scratched up and confused but nothing was broken.
"We sat talking to him for a couple of hours until the coastguard arrived and tried to relax him a bit.
"We cut him out of the nettles with a set of secateurs my work colleague brought down.
“I think what happened was the man took what he thought was a path and couldn’t turn back and that’s how he ended up in the nettles.”
The cheating TV star is believed to be filming in the area and Adam said Robson showed he is a real life action hero.
“He just took control and was just on it like an action man,” he recalled.
“He was an absolute hero.”
A statement released through his agent said: "Robson said he only did what anyone else would have done in the circumstances.
"He hopes the gentleman in question is okay and Robson gave all his praise to the rescue team.
"Robson had heard the gentleman shouting for help, he tried to get down to him but sadly he was too far down the cliff, so Robson called the coastguard who sent a rescue crew to bring the man to safety, all recognition should go to them."
Green’s colourful love life includes divorcing his first wife of eight years after it was discovered he had been having a four year affair with Pamela McDonald, the then wife of Emmerdale actor Ian Sharrock.
