the long and short of it

What you REALLY need to know about penis size – from ‘growers and showers’ to which Brits are the most well endowed

IT’S the most hotly debated question in sex: Does size matter?

Now, a new survey by a dating service which caters for both well-endowed and more modestly sized men may have finally come up with the answer.

It found that 44 per cent of women were most satisfied if their partner had a penis measuring eight inches when erect.

But considering that most men have penises of 5.8 inches – or 14.9cm – that may not be welcome news to a lot of the male population.

So what's the long and short of it on penis size? Tanith Carey investigates.

Women want biggest penises for one-night stands

11

There may not be much in it but women having a one-night stand prefer a bigger manhood.

In one eye-opening study, researchers showed women three-dimensional models of erect penises, ranging from 4 to 8.5 inches (10.1cm and 21.59cm) long, and up to 7 inches (17.78cm) in circumference.

They asked them to choose their favourite size for both a long-term relationship – and a fling.

They found that the average length women preferred for a long-term relationship was 6.3 inches (16cm) with a girth of 4.8 inches (12.1cm).

11

For one-night stands, women opted for slightly bigger penises, with a length of 6.4 inches (16.25cm) and a girth of 5 inches (12.7cm)

According to the researchers at the Universities of New Mexico and Southern California, women may have chosen the bigger penis for one-night stands for novelty value - and to make it a more memorable night.

The rest of time, it seems that women prefer something more comfortable.

The growers and showers

11

What you see at first is not necessarily what you get.

Scientists have divided penises into two types by looking at ultrasounds of 205 male members.

They were measured when both flaccid and erect.

They found that just over a quarter are “growers” which start on the smaller side, but grow another 1.57 inches (4cm) when erect.

The rest were “showers” who have longer flaccid penises, but don’t grow as much when they are erect - an average of just 1.22 inches (3.1cm) according to a study in the journal Nature by researchers at New Orleans Tulane University (2018).

According to author Wayne Hellstrom, younger men are more likely to increase their length because they are likely to have better blood flow to the organ and more elasticity.

He’s more worried about what his mates think than you

You might assume your man most wants to impress you with his penis.

Sorry, to disappoint. But it turns out he’s more interested in what his mates think.

In one survey, by researchers at Melbourne’s Victoria University (2013), 738 men between 18 and 76 were asked about their body image.

Men’s pre-occupations with size were rarely to do with pleasing sexual partners or even appearing as a better sexual partner.

But instead of dwelling on what their partner thought of their physique, it turned out they were more concerned about what their friends thought in places like changing rooms.

Researcher Dr Annabel Chan Feng Yi said: “Men’s pre-occupations with size were rarely to do with pleasing sexual partners or even appearing as a better sexual partner.

“It was often more about competition with other men. Many felt most insecure about their size in environments where other men might see them, such as gym changing rooms.”

Bad news boys…it gets smaller as you get older

11

If a man’s erect penis is 6 inches (15.24cm) long when he is in his thirties, it might be an inch (2.54cm) less by the time he reaches his seventies, according to experts.

As the years go on, the arteries of the penis clog up with fatty deposits called plaque in the same ways as they also build up in the heart’s blood vessels.

This makes it harder for blood to circulate when a man is aroused, according to Professor Frank Chinegwundoh, consultant urological surgeon for Barts Health NHS Trust.

Secondly, the collagen in the erectile tissue that helps make erections possible becomes less stretchy as a man gets older.

It may also be worth keeping the weight off

When a man gains weight about his middle, that can also make their members look smaller, according to consultant urologist Zaki Almallah, who is based at Birmingham's BMI Priory Hospital.

He says: “A build-up of excess fat in the torso can lead to part of the penis getting buried in the fat, so it ends up looking smaller too.”

It’s not just the penis that gets bigger

11

During sex, it’s fair to say that most of us are mainly focused on the size of one key part of the male anatomy – the penis.

But that’s not all that gets bigger during intercourse.

The testicles also increase in size by half as much again, according to consultant urological surgeon Vivek Wadhwa of University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Spire Parkway Hospital.

He says: “During arousal, the testes can increase in size up to 50 per cent, due to blood vessels engorging with blood.

“This causes thickening of the skin of the scrotum - the outer sack - and the filling of the testicles.”

But there’s a reason why you may not have spotted this change because during sex, the testicles are drawn up into the groin both to protect them and so the sperm doesn’t have to travel as far from the testis to the end of the penis when a man ejaculates.

Professor of anatomy, Dr Adam Taylor of the University of Lancaster, says: ”Usually, the testicles hang slightly further away from the body to reduce their temperature, as sperm production is better at a lower temperature.”

“When a man is aroused, they are drawn up by a muscle located in the scrotum, called the cremaster muscle.

“It can be activated by stroking the inner thigh, and this makes scrotum to “contract” and pull the testicles closer to the body.”

Shoe size is NOT the best guide

For years, women have believed that checking out a man’s shoe size was the best guide to the length of his manhood.

Now it turns out we’ve been looking at the wrong place all along – the real clue is in how long his fingers are.

According to a scientific study, men whose index fingers are most similar in length to their ring fingers tend to have bigger penises.

For the research in the Asian Journal of Andrology, South Korean doctors measured the index – or second finger – on the right hand of 144 male volunteers aged 20 and over.

They also noted down the length of each man’s ring or fourth finger for the study before measuring their size flaccid and erect.

They found that the men with a smaller gap between the height of these two fingers, like Simon Cowell or Justin Bieber, tended to have bigger penises.

This is because testosterone levels in the womb not only control a boy’s future penis length, they also decide how long a man’s fingers will grow, especially on the right hand.

There’s good and bad news for Welsh men

11

Until now, Welsh men have been famed for their beautiful voices.

But it seems it’s not the reason they stand out.

A survey of 2000 people by London clinic International Andrology looked at penis size and sexual satisfaction across 12 regions through-out the UK.

They found that the Welsh have the largest manhoods, measuring 6.56 inches on average (16.66cm).

However, despite their size, they have the worst sex lives – suggesting size really doesn’t matter.

In the bedroom they were given just a 57.14 per cent satisfaction rating, compared with 71.43 per cent in the East Midlands who are clearly working harder with what they have got - because they have some of the smallest manhoods at 6.11 inches (15.52cm).

Bigger penises can give more pleasure

11

It seems that men with larger-than-average manhoods can make women orgasm more easily.

A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine (2012) asked more than 300 women about their recent sex and the length of the penises of the men they had slept with.

Defining “average” as 5.8 inches (14.73cm) – or the size of a £20 note –researchers asked women if they were more likely to orgasm vaginally with a longer-than-average or shorter-than-average penis.

The scientists found the women were more likely to say they had enjoyed vaginal orgasms in the past month with men with longer- than-average organs.

Stuart Brody, a psychologist at the University of the West of Scotland who led the research said: “This might be due at least in part to greater ability of a longer penis to stimulate the entire length of the vagina, and the cervix.”

And finally….

Though the question is often directed at men, women conveniently forget that a woman’s vagina also plays a big part in whether she feels satisfied by intercourse.

The walls of the vagina are made of elastic muscle which expand as needed during penetration.

Usually vaginas are about 2.75 inches (about 7cm) to about 3.25 inches (8cm) deep.

But during arousal they extend up to almost five inches (12.7cm) and can accommodate a penis of up to twice that size.

An important factor may also be how tight and toned the muscles are.

A study published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (2008) found that women who regularly performed Kegel exercises – or clenching exercises to strengthen the pelvis floor - reported greater sexual satisfaction and more orgasms than women who didn’t.

Gynaecologist Dr Christine O’Connor says: “It’s not an exact physical fit you are looking for in terms of sexual function.

“It’s more about the communication between the two partners and making sure both are getting what they need out of the experience and are comfortable.”
