The duchess, 73, visited the National Gallery which is the first museum to reopen and Boots shop staff – who arranged safe spaces for victims of domestic abuse during the pandemic.

Arriving at the museum, she said: “I cannot speak through this. It’s quite hard having a conversation.

“Those visors are much easier.” And added: “It’s a bit muffled. You have to have your ear trumpet to hear.”

Camilla also visited Boots’ Piccadilly store to hear about their support of the charity Hestia’s Safe Spaces programme for victims of domestic violence.

She said: “It’s not easy to have a conversation.” And added: “Thank you so much for all the work you do. It’s so important to have your help and we definitely have to talk about [domestic violence ] more. We must break the shroud of silence.
