34 injured in severe turbulence as flight travels from London to Kuala Lumpur
Malaysia Airlines flight MH1 experienced the 'brief' bout of turbulence over the Bay of Bengal as it headed to Malaysia
THIRTY-FOUR people were injured on a Malaysia Airlines flight from London yesterday after it hit severe turbulence.
Malaysia Airlines flight MH1 from London to Kuala Lumpur hit a "brief moment of severe turbulence" as it travelled over the Bay of Bengal, the airline said.
"A small number" of injured passengers and crew were treated by medical officers after arriving at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
Photos shared on social media show carnage on board, with overturned food carts, baggage littering the aisles and cracks in overhead lockers.
Passenger Harith Azman shared photos on Facebook showing fallen food carts and a damaged hand rest.
He said his dad was in the bathroom when the turbulence started and smacked his head as he lurched towards the ceiling.
Another passenger Elreena Nasip took to Twitter to tell of her terror on board the flight.

Sharing a photo of someone being stretchered away from the airport, she said: "LEGIT SCARY. THANK GOD WE'RE SAFE."
She added: "Still in shock of what happened, all i could think of was 'THIS IS IT. THIS ISSS ITTTTTT'.
"Like I saw a girl flew [sic] off her chair, right before my very eyes."
Medical officers were waiting at the Malaysian airport to treat injured passengers and crew.
Dozens of the 378 passengers and crew on board are thought to have been injured in the severe conditions.
Photos taken after landing show a woman being stretchered from the plane in a neck brace.
A statement from Malaysia Airlines said: "Malaysia Airlines added in a statement: 'Malaysia Airlines flight MH1 from London-Heathrow landed on time in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday 5 June.
"During the flight over the Bay of Bengal the passenger seatbelt light was switched on due to air turbulence. Due to a brief moment of severe turbulence some passengers suffered minor injuries.
"Medical crew and Malaysia Airlines senior management met the aircraft on arrival in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).
"A small number of affected passengers and crew have been treated by medical officers.
"Malaysia Airlines has assisted the 378 passengers and crew onboard MH1 and sincerely apologises for any inconvenience caused by this weather event which was entirely beyond our control."
It is the latest in a series of disasters to plague the Asian airline, after the MH370 and MH17 disasters in 2014 pushed the airline to the brink of bankruptcy.
Flight MH370 disappeared on March 8 travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.
Debris has been found in the Indian Ocean but what happened to the flight remains a mystery.
MH17 was blown from the sky by a suspected Russian missile as it flew over war-torn Ukraine, killing all 298 passengers and crew.
