Today will be warm with plenty of sunshine for most areas before cloud moves into the west, bringing with it a lot of rain.

But by the afternoon, heavy showers are expected to break out in Northern Ireland, western Scotland and the south coasts of England and Wales.

Tuesday is set to see the first thunderstorms of the week in south-east England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

But it will remain dry and mostly sunny elsewhere.

Wednesday will remain warm and humid with thundery showers in northern areas but largely fine elsewhere with long sunny spells.

Met Office forecaster Tom Crocker said we have already seen the hottest day of the week with temperatures yesterday reaching 26C to 27C.

He added that by Tuesday, "there will be widespread showers breaking out across most of the country that will get heavy and see some thundery downpours so this may perhaps be a shock to the system for some."

The Met Office's Emma Sillitoe added: "On Wednesday, it will be similar again with isolated showers across the south west and the western coast of England but heavy at times across Scotland.

Temperatures will be around 22-23C.

"Thursday will be much drier, with one or two showers in Scotland but most places in England will be warm and sunny with highs of around 24-25C.
