We’re all Doomed… But this game certainly isn’t: Cult FPS classic’s relaunch is helluva success
Blood, guts, gore and a shed-load of demons make for an instant classic
IT'S the 1990s and I'm sitting at my PC with one bullet left in the gun and demons from hell swarming around me.
Fast-forward 20 years and I'm getting a sense of deja vu.
Apart from modernisation Doom still feels the same. It's brutal, heart-pounding and an adrenaline thrill.
Three cliches? Yes, but this savage FPS is a nostalgic nod to old school shooters at a time where developers are only looking to make money rather than a masterpiece.
Doom isn't that Mona Lisa, but it's a bloody good effort.
Sometimes, reviewing a game can be difficult, taking it for what it is rather than what it once was.
The original Doom will go down as one of the best games ever, and while this is not that, it's a worthy of acclaim in its own right.
This remake is both fun and clever. It does well to mix what the original cult classics did well and adds a new twist.
There's plenty of guns, power ups and fun to be had, slaying monsters by their thousands.
Even being killed is a joy as enemies rip out your intestines, tear off your arms and beat you to death with them...

There's music which just adds to your stress levels, making epic boss and multi-mob fights even more heart-stopping.
It all comes together to feel like an old school arcade shooter from simpler times in your youth.
The problem with Doom is its repetitiveness is also its downfall in multiplayer, and that is where FPSs live and die in this day and age.
Maps are small, and while this does make for some exciting gameplay, you get that samesy feeling after a while.
Only time will tell whether the competitive players out there will continue to give Doom their time over the coming months.
Bethesda has already confirmed to The Sun they plan on releasing more content for up to a year, and only then will we see if their investment is worth it.
In the mean time, Doom is definitely worth your money.
Maybe not if you're after a game for the long haul, but it'll keep you hooked for a little while at least, and you'll have a blast while it lasts.
