A HUNGRY cop put on his blue lights, ran a red and smashed into a BMW — after his wife texted to say: “Tea is on the table.”
John Byrne, 28, hit 80mph in a 40mph zone so he could get home quickly when his missus sent him a picture of the grub.
PC Byrne had “not eaten” during a 14-hour work stint.
A court heard he told colleagues he “wanted to get off-duty”.
Moments before the collision, his PC passenger “challenged” him about his speed.
Ex-RAF officer Byrne who guarded royalty when in the Queen’s Colour Squadron, said he regretted his “foolish decision” to turn on his unmarked Hyundai’s emergency lights.
At Manchester crown court, he got a 12-month community order for dangerous driving, a year’s drive ban and 40 hours’ unpaid work.
The Merseyside Police officer, of St Helens, faces a disciplinary hearing.
