Coronavirus cases and deaths – how many have there been in the UK?

THE coronavirus death toll in the UK has now jumped to 42,072.

The total number of Covid-19 cases in the UK currently stands at 453,264 after 7,108 new positive cases were recorded.

SEPTEMBER

Tuesday, September 29 saw the biggest daily rise in cases recorded since the start of the outbreak.

Both September 29 and 30 saw 71 deaths recorded - the joint highest since July 1 when 99 fatalities were logged.

It brings the total number of coronavirus deaths in the UK to 42,072 while 453,264 have now tested positive for the bug.

On Friday the number of infections increased by 6,874 - the highest daily rise in cases until now.

September 29 figures were considerably higher than they were a week prior, when cases increased by 4,926 and the number of deaths rose by 37.

AUGUST

By the end of the month coronavirus deaths in the UK hit 41,501 while cases reached 335,873. 

The death toll fell to 41,329 on August 12 after a change in the way coronavirus deaths were recorded.

Only deaths that happen within 28 days of a positive test are now being counted - meaning deaths dropped by 5,377.

At the start of the month experts feared the country was at a “tipping point” over a second wave of the virus hitting the country.

JULY

The coronavirus death toll topped 46,119 people by the end of the month.

July 31 saw 120 die from the virus, the largest rise in deaths for 33 days.

The number of confirmed cases passed the 300,000 mark on July 27.

The government launched and “urgent” review into the way Public Health England (PHE) reported the coronavirus figures.

JUNE

Coronavirus deaths in the UK hit 43,730 by the end of the month.

June 29 saw 25 more people died from Covid-19 in one of the smallest daily rises since March 17.

A 12-year-old with underlying health conditions died from the virus on June 19.

June 18 saw a 13-day-old baby die from Covid-19.

MAY

By the end of the month there were 38,161 deaths with cases at 271,222.

Deaths rose by 545 to pass the 35,000 mark in the UK - the highest daily increase for a week – on May 19.

The death toll passed 30,000 on May 6.

APRIL

The end of the month saw the death toll leap to 26,711.

On April 29 though the government included the figures from care homes, which saw the figures rise from 21,678 on April 28 to 26,097 the following day, due to the inclusion.

Deaths in the UK on April 25 passed the government's best-case scenario of up to 20,000 victims after 813 more people died.

The milestone was given back in March as a benchmark for Britain "doing very well" in the pandemic.

MARCH

UK deaths hit 1,829 by the end of the month as hidden deaths at home were revealed.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson tested positive for the virus on March 27.

Prince Charles was diagnosed with the virus on March 25.

The UK went into lockdown on March 24 which saw 6,730 confirmed cases and deaths rose to 338.

The Department of Health confirmed the deadly bug is spreading at its fastest rate yet on March 6.

FEBRUARY

The first British person to die from the coronavirus was in Japan and reported on February 28, they had been a passenger on the Diamond Princess Cruise.

On the same day Wales confirmed its first coronavirus case.

A woman became the first Covid-19 case in London on February 12.

A Brit businessman, later identified as Steve Walsh, diagnosed in Brighton was infected in Singapore and unknowingly became a super-spreader, passing the virus on in France and UK on February 6.
