The total death toll now sits at 42,202 while the total number of infections is 460,178.
Yesterday another 7,108 cases were recorded - the second day in a row the figure rose by more than 7,000.
The daily death toll remains just a fraction of those seen at the peak of the outbreak, where the seven-day average peaked at 941 on April 13.
Recent figures also show flu and pneumonia is currently claiming the lives of around 10 times more Brits than coronavirus.
Boris Johnson last night warned Brits not to "throw in the sponge" at a critical moment in the pandemic.
He stressed: “No matter how impatient, how fed up we may become, there is only one way of doing this.”
It comes as...
- Almost a third of Britain is under local lockdowns and restrictions
- New rules were introduced banning indoor mixing in Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Warrington
- Coronavirus hospital admissions were revealed to be the highest since July
- A new interactive map revealed the number of cases near every school in England
- Jeremy Corbyn was pictured at a dinner party breaking the rule of six
About a third of Britain is now living under lockdown or restrictions as Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Warrington were slapped with new rules.
The move follows other local lockdowns that meant areas including all of the North East, Greater Manchester, Birmingham and Leicester must comply with strict social guidelines and curfews.
The Health Secretary revealed the news to MPs today - but they won't get to vote on them.
Announcing the restrictions, Matt Hancock said it was a "difficult but necessary" move after a spike in "localised" cases.
But the Middlesbrough Mayor Andy Preston reacted with fury this lunchtime and vowed to defy the Government's new laws.
In an angry Twitter video he fumed: "We tried to communicate with Government but they didn’t listen.
"They’re imposing restrictions that’ll kill viable jobs and damage mental health. I do not accept the Government’s intended restrictions - they’re based on ignorance."
He accused Mr Hancock of acting with a "monstrous and frightening lack of communication and ignorance."
