The six-month-old baby boy was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

A neighbour claimed the tot died after "being suffocated with a hoodie", although the results of a forensic post-mortem examination will not be known until a few weeks time.

Another neighbour said: "They were drugged up. They left the baby for dead in a pile of blood by repeatedly beating him and suffocated him with a hoodie.

"It's awful. Police were still there all night, and still there now.

";The baby was always crying in the pushchair. I used to see them at the local shop, constantly crying.

"I wish I would have asked if everything was ok or called someone for help. You don't know what happens behind closed doors.

"All I know is the couple are both unemployed and have another boy aged four. It's such a sad story.
