Devon police investigating ‘suspicious’ death of eight-month-old boy

Emergency services were called to a property in Newton Abbot, Devon on Wednesday morning

A 27-year-old man has been arrested following a ‘major incident’ which left an eight-month-old boy dead.

Police were called by ambulance services on Wednesday morning to a property in Newton Abbot, Devon.

A three-year-old girl was spotted screaming outside the property shortly after the emergency services arrived.

A Devon and Cornwall police spokesman said: “Devon and Cornwall police are investigating the death on an eight-month-old boy in Brownshill Close, Newton Abbot.

“Police and scenes of crime officers have attended the house to undertake initial investigations and we are currently treating the death as unexplained.

“A 27-year-old man is in police custody in connection with this matter and awaits questioning.”

DS Mike Brewer from the public protection unit added that the death is being treated as suspicious and that police are investigating the circumstances.

Resident Richard Underwood said he was stopped from driving down Brownshill Close where the baby died.

He was told by a police officer that the road would be closed for a considerable amount of time because of a major incident.

Mr Underwood said he noticed, further down the road, several emergency service vehicles, including an ambulance, and a police photographer.

He said: “I just pulled up in my car – I live down the lane.

“A policeman told me the road is going to be blocked for a long time because it’s a major incident.

“I could see one ambulance.

“There’s a young child of about three screaming and there’s someone lying outside on the concrete.”

The local said he saw an officer escorting the hysterical child from the property.
