Today's reported 12,872 is 2,294 less than yesterday's tally which was 15,166. There were also 15 less deaths.

Scotland has recorded 956 new cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours but no deaths have been registered.

A further 32 people who tested positive for coronavirus have died in hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths reported in hospitals to 30,471, NHS England said today.

There is usually a lag in the Department of Health figures reported over the weekend.

Meanwhile, one of the main medical advisers to the British government has warned that the country is at a tipping point in its battle against the coronavirus pandemic.

England's deputy chief medical officer, Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, said in a statement that the country is at a tipping point similar to where we were in March.

The UK has experienced Europe's deadliest outbreak with more than 42,750 deaths.

Mr Van-Tam laid out his hope that history will not repeat itself in light of better testing and treatments, as well as greater knowledge of the virus itself.

The PM is poised to order pubs and restaurants to shut in a bid to curb the spread of the virus in an announcement tomorrow.

Under a proposed three-tier system, different parts of the country would be placed in different categories, with areas in the highest level expected to face the toughest restrictions.

It means ten million Northerners could be back under a tougher lockdown if they fall into Tier 3 of the plans.

New stricter rules are set to come in, ordering people to not mix indoors and outdoors in the worst hits parts of the country.

Beauty salons and sports venues could also be closed down in the severe regional lockdown as coronavirus cases rise in Northern England,

CASES RISING

Infections have gone up in all but three areas of England, new figures show.

Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, Luton and Wolverhampton recorded a fall in Covid-19 cases in the last week.

It comes as the number of people in hospital with coronavirus increased across every part of England on Saturday - rising to 1,167 in the north west from 725 previous week.

A further 15,166 lab-confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK were reported on Saturday, and 81 more deaths were confirmed of people who died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19.

Cases nearly tripled in two weeks as figures showed an increase in hospitalisation.

England's deputy chief medical officer Professor Jonathan Van-Tam said the country is at a tipping point similar to the first wave of coronavirus.

He added: "Earlier in the year, we were fighting a semi-invisible disease, about which we had little knowledge, and it seeded in the community at great speed.

"Now we know where it is and how to tackle it - let's grasp this opportunity and prevent history from repeating itself."

It comes after Public Health England admitted they had missed 15,841 cases from their official stats between September 25 and October 2.
