More than one million people in South Yorkshire are now living under the new rules as a result of the change.

Large groups were also seen enjoying nights out in Soho, Central London, as well as in Manchester and Nottingham.

Many areas in the North are already under increased restrictions with others set to join them.

Meanwhile Nottingham is on the brink of being placed under the harshest lockdown measures.

Despite a fall in the number of cases in Nottingham, major hospitals have been forced to postpone surgeries.

Nottingham MPs have discussed with Government ministers the possibility of fresh measures.

The leaders were shown grim data on the state of the spread of the virus in Nottingham and the surrounding areas.

All of those areas are expected to be thrown into tough Tier Three restrictions as soon as next week.

They have only been in Tier Two measures for a little over a week, despite having the worst infection rate in England a fortnight ago.

Local leaders in Liverpool, Manchester and South Yorkshire all had extensive meetings with ministers and Downing Street aides before they were given the strict new rules, and sealed funding deals.

Greater Manchester was placed under Tier Three restrictions at 12.01am yesterday.

Nearly seven million Brits are now in the highest tier across Liverpool, Lancashire, Wales and other areas.

South Yorkshire including Sheffield moved into Tier Three from 12.01 this morning, while Warrington will be placed into the same "very high" alert level next week.

West Yorkshire is also on the brink of stricter rules, with talks ongoing between central government and the leaders of cities in the area about moving to Tier Three.

Large groups of people were also seen enjoying dinner and drinks in Soho, Central London last night.

The capital is currently under Tier Two coronavirus rules, as the city experiences a spike in infections.
