A man who hurled racist abuse at a woman wearing a Muslim veil inside a busy DIY store is now being hunted by police.
Officers described the verbal abuse towards the 28-year-old woman in front of shocked shoppers as completely unprovoked.
A CCTV image of a man police want to speak to as part of their investigation was released by detectives today.
The man is said to have used racially abusive language towards the woman, who was wearing a hijab.
The incident happened at the Wilko store in Arundel Street, Portsmouth, Hants., at around 11am on Thursday, June 2.
Police describe the suspect as a white man aged in his late 30s to early 50s, who is 5 ft 6 in tall and of a heavy build.
He had long greying blonde or brown hair tied in a ponytail and spoke with a local accent.
Officers today made an appeal for witnesses to the incident to contact them with information.
Police Staff Investigator Olivia Freeman of Hampshire Police said: "This is a report of racially aggravated harassment aimed at a young woman.
"This was unprovoked and unacceptable.
"The incident occurred in a public place, in front of other customers visiting the store that day."
