She died on Wednesday whilst swimming at a Spanish holiday resort in Santa Susanna, 35 miles away from Barcelona.

Ms McKenzie, who had two sons and a daughter, was studying for a career in childcare at Fraserburgh's North East Scotland College campus.

Husband David, 38, announced the death of his wife online, stating it was with a "heavy heart" that he had to tell everyone about the death of his "beautiful wife".

Friends were quick to pay tribute to the "proud" and "smiling" mother.

Magdalena Jozefowicz, who studied alongside Jennifer at college, said: "It's terrible that his has happened."

"She was a fantastic person. She was always very helpful and smiling. I never saw her angry or upset once."

“She was very good with children. And she was so very proud of her children. She was a very good mother. But I’ll always remember her as a very polite, helpful person.”

Another friend posted on social media: "I can't put into words the grief I'm feeling.

You have been taken from us too young and too soon. RIP my friend."

"Cannot get over it, such a shock, RIP," said a different user.

David's mother later posted on Facebook saying: "We appreciate all your kind words following the tragic death of Jennifer.

"Please allow both families to come to terms with her tragic passing."

Yesterday, the Foreign Commonwealth Office said it was working with Mr McKenzie to bring the family back to Fraserburgh.

A spokesman said: "We are providing support to the family of a British national who has sadly died in Barcelona, Spain."
