Competition designs revealed for Elon Musk’s superfast shuttle which will shoot from LA to San Fran at 700mph

Teams from across the world are competing to have their pod picked to be the winning design

THESE are the first pictures of what Elon Musk’s Hyperloop transportation system could look like.

Teams from across the world have entered the design competition, which will determine what the pods will look like.

29 university teams, a high school group and a team from Reddit have been invited to build scale models of their designs to present in Hawthorne, California.

By the next stage of the competition, over a dozen groups will have the chance to build working models of their creations for testing.

The space-age system, developed by business magnate Elon Musk, is being described as the “fifth mode of transport”.

High-speed pods will shoot through a tube at speeds of 700mph between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

The transportation system is being developed by the PayPal founder’s company SpaceX.

The system is powered by magnetic levitation.

By sucking out all the air from the tube, the pods can be propelled from one end to the other at super speeds.

Passengers will be able to travel between the two Californian cities in just 30 minutes.

In a car, the journey takes over five and a half hours.

Each team was given money by SpaceX to realise their designs.

Teams have come from Germany, Japan and America as well as America.

Grace Everitt, from the University of Florida, told the Verge: “There are so many unknowns because this is the first year of the competition, and the first time anything like this has been done, but it's thrilling to be part of the first wave of the revolution.”

The design which had the best design and build was from a team at MIT.

The striking red and white design was closely followed by a Dutch team from the Delft University of Technology.

The design by the University of Cincinatti proposes that the pod would have hover engines.

One of the only creations with wheels came from the University of Florida, which would be used for breaking.

The only high school team to progress to the second round was from St John's High School in Texas.

It is unknown when the finalists will show Musk their designs in California, but it is thought that it will be in August.

The competition was launched in January.

The news comes after Hyperloop had its first successful test in early May.

A prototype sled sped along a section of track in Nevada at 116mph.

Musk hopes that the Hyperloop will be transporting passengers by 2021.
