Furious parents threaten to sue school after their children are ‘unfairly’ banned from leavers’ ball
Bid to recover the hundreds of pounds that have been shelled out on outfits for the gala
FURIOUS parents have threatened a school with legal action after their children were banned from going to their prom.
The teens claim they have been ‘unfairly’ punished after they refused to leave a communal area when asked by staff, while other pupils were misbehaving.
The school has barred a total of 15 youngsters following the incident, but angry parents said the decision was “too extreme” and are looking to take legal action to recover money spent on outfits for the event.
The parents have also launched complaints with Frederick Gent School in Alfreton, Derbys., the local council and Ofsted.
The pupils involved have written letters of apology in a bid to be readmitted to the prom.
Debbie Kavaliunas, 49, whose daughter Laura was one of the students banned, said: "The general opinion of all the parents is that the punishment is too extreme and that it is wrong to not let them go to prom.
"We are all extremely angry and upset that something they have been looking forward to from the start of year 11 has been taken away from them.
"They believed they were not in the wrong whereas the students who caused all the bother are still going to prom and have not received any form of punishment."
The banned pupils insist they weren't doing anything other than "sitting and chatting" and feel like they have been singled out by school staff when it was other students who caused the problem.
Mum-of-three Debbie said: "Most of these pupils are usually well behaved and have excellent attendance records and have not been in trouble throughout their school years.
"They are predicted good grades, have been working hard throughout year 11 and some of the students even serve on the prom committee and have had a lot of input into arranging the event.
"These students - especially the girls - are devastated that they cannot go and celebrate with their friends."
Debbie added that many parents had "struggled" to find the £250-£400 which the event had cost them so far, adding it was "a lot to find" for working class parents.
A spokesman for Frederick Gent School said: "The Year 11 prom is for students that have had good behaviour."
