A phone supplied to him by £30,000-a-year Queen’s College in Taunton, Somerset, also contained smut.

The head — whose wife Linda teaches at the 776- pupil boarding school — resigned when confronted by governors, who also challenged him about “inappropriate adult relationships”.

The scandal comes months after a surprise swoop by the Independent Schools Inspectorate, which found policies for safeguarding pupils were “unsatisfactory”.

Cops said their own investigation was into “safeguarding concerns relating to a former member of staff”.

But they stressed: “These concerns do not relate to any current pupils.”

The school was founded 173 years ago on strict Methodist principles.

The conduct of Mr Alcock — head for 15 years — was described by chairman of governors Mark Edwards as having fallen “well short of what the college expects”.

He added: “So far, the police investigations have not uncovered any criminal offences or anything that suggests any pupil has been affected or was at risk.”
