DONALD Trump said it is a "great thing" that Britons have "taken back their country" after voting in favour of Brexit.

The Presidential hopeful made the comments as he arrived at Trump Turnberry for the reopening of a refurbished Open venue golf resort.

The divisive billionaire bought the Ayrshire golf course in 2014 and has added his name to the resort.

He arrived their this morning in his private helicopter and wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ baseball cap.

Crowds greeted him wearing ‘Make Turnberry Great Again’ hats, as he prepared to cut the ribbon on its £200 million refurbishment.

Trump owns more 14 golf courses in the US and opened his first in the UK, at the Menie estate in Aberdeenshire, in 2012.

Some Americans have taken the UKs break from Europe as a precursor to Trump becoming their next president.

One tweeter wrote: “Brexit is further proof that Donald J Trump will be the next President of the United States.”

Now the man himself has given Britain’s leap for independence the thumbs up.

His security had prepared for protests against the controversial Republican.

Earlier this week, two local residents began flying Mexican flags on properties surrounding Mr Trump's other Scottish golf course in Aberdeenshire.

They said they wanted to "show solidarity" with the people of Mexico after Mr Trump outlined plans to build a wall along the US-Mexico border to stop illegal immigrants.

But leading golf writer Mike Aiken praised Trump’s investment in the resort.

He said: “You cannot take issue with what he has done with the golf course. It is top-notch.”
