Three dead and two rushed to hospital after horror crash as deadly black ice coats roads
THREE people have died, with a further two rushed to hospital after a horror road crash.
near a junction at 4.35am on Friday.
Cops have now confirmed a woman, 30, and two men, aged 36 and 62, were pronounced dead at the scene in Bothwell, South Lanarkshire.
Another man, 31, was rushed to University Hospital Wishaw and is in a critical condition.
A 42-year-old man has also been taken to hospital where his condition is described as stable.
The crash happened as Scotland's roads were coated in deadly black ice.
The silver motor involved in the crash sat mangled in the road near a demolished wall.
Officers ushered residents in and out of the sealed-off street as investigators examined the scene.
One local, who didn’t want to give his name, said: “I saw the state of the car involved and it was shocking.”
A mum, who also asked not to be named, said: “Conditions this morning were horrible. There’s a split in the road that comes up quite fast if you’re not familiar with it.”
Central Scotland Labour MSP Monica Lennon said: “The news has caused a lot of upset in the area today.
“We are all grateful to the emergency services and council staff who responded.”
South Lanarkshire Council bosses warned commuters a stretch of the road would remain closed all day.
Posting on Twitter, they said: "Bothwell Road will be closed from Bothwell Road roundabout (M74/Raith junction) towards Bothwell to Blairston Avenue for the rest of today due to an accident."
Chief Inspector Darren Faulds from the Road Policing Unit said: “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those involved in this crash. Our officers are liaising with the families and providing support.
“Our investigation is ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this crash.

"I would also like to speak to anyone who was driving on this road around the time of the crash to come forward.”
