MORE than a million people have signed an online petition calling for a new European Union referendum.

The milestone was reached at 10.45am, a little over 24 hours after Britain voted to leave the EU by 51.9 per cent to 48.1 per cent.

The government website hosting the petition crashed under the strain of so many people trying to add their names.

Pro-EU campaigners are demanding the government calls a second vote as the result was so close.

The petition, set up by William Oliver Healey before the result, states: "We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the Remain or Leave vote is less than 60 per cent based on a turnout less than 75 per cent, there should be another referendum."

Turnout for Thursday's referendum was 72.2 per cent, the highest since the general election in 1992.

The clamour to add signatures to the petition comes amid protests from groups unhappy with the outcome and reports that some people are already regretting voting to leave.

The petition raced towards the one million mark as it emerged Pro-EU MPs are plotting to scupper the Brexit vote, which is not legally binding.

A map on the official website shows the highest concentration of signatures came from cities such as London, Cambridge, Oxford, Bristol and Brighton, which all had high numbers of Remain votes.

A separate petition is calling for London Mayor Sadiq Khan to declare the capital independent from the United Kingdom and apply to join the EU.

MPs must consider holding a debate in Parliament if any petition gets 100,000 signatures - and the one for a second referendum already has more than ten times that number.

Parliament's Petitions Committee, which considers whether such submissions should be raised in the House, is to hold its next meeting on Tuesday.

Yesterday a House of Commons spokeswoman said the website had been taken out of action temporarily because of "exceptionally high volumes of simultaneous users on a single petition, significantly higher than on any previous occasion".

PM David Cameron quit after gambling his career on winning the national poll as voters stuck two fingers up to Establishment figures warning of disaster after Brexit.

The final tally across the UK showed 17, 410, 742 voting to leave the EU against 16,141,241 opting to stay.

However 62 per cent Scots chose to remain - prompting SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon to begin arrangements for another referendum within two years to split Scotland from the rest of the country.
