Dubbed the PWAGs and SWAGs, the wives of players such as Switzerland's Blerim Dzemaili and Poland's Robert Lewandowski were a distraction for fans in the stands, despite perhaps the best goal of the tournament from Swiss midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri.

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny's wife also wowed stunned fans as she posed for a selfie with Lewandowski's wife Anna.

On the field Shaqiri netted a sublime bicycle kick which made the Swiss roll as it levelled the score with Poland in the 82nd minute.

However when the game ended with a penalty shootout it was Poland who walked away victorious and won the game 5-4.

Stoke midfielder Shaqiri said it was a "great disappointment" and that his country "could have achieved something very big".

The side had plenty of chances at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne but were unable to put them away.

Switzerland haven't won a knockout match at a tournament since the 1938 World Cup.
