'UTTERLY RIDICULOUS'

Furious parents slam school rules on street ‘split in two’ as one reopens but other stays shut

PARENTS have today blasted the "confusing" rules over schools reopening - as one opens up and another shuts on the same London street.

One frustrated mum said it was "utterly ridiculous" for her kids to go back to class just half a mile away from an area considered too unsafe for another school to open.

Angry parents feel let down after schools in their area remain open

Both on Burlington Road in New Malden, Burlington Junior School is in the Kingston borough, while Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School is in the Merton borough - just 650 metres away.

All Kingston schools can reopen as planned, but Merton schools have to remain closed - leaving parents near the border baffled.

It was announced yesterday millions of schoolkids in the worst-hit Covid areas will stay home for at least an extra two weeks after the Christmas holidays.

Mum Bilal Ahmed, from Kingston, told the Sun Online: "It's scary and unsafe for everyone in the school community."

The confused mum now has to send two of her children to Burlington Junior School when term starts, while the other stays at home for online learning as his school over the boundary is shut.

She said: "[It's] exasperating really and the juggling will just have to be done.

"On parents, they are amazed and disgusted in equal measure. Its utterly ridiculous.

"School can’t currently guarantee Covid safety for themselves let alone kids and parents and the wider school support staff like dinner ladies, etc."

Another mum in Kingston fumed she felt "unbelievable rage" at the decision making, forcing her kids to go to school so close to a hotspot zone.

Oksana, a mum of a five-year-old boy at school in New Malden, added: "One road, two schools, two different rules is very weird. It doesn't make a lot of sense."

And Emma McKenzie, 32, whose Alex, 6, goes to a school in Surbiton, said: "As far as I'm aware, Kingston has had more cases. It's illogical.

"In my opinion, all schools in the country should be given the same rules."

Dad Roy Tattersall told the Sun Online: "It's very weird. It's like a road split in two for no reason.

"It's worrying because you think, 'what's the point?' You just have to hope that people know what they're doing."

Around one million primary kids in these areas will be forced to learn from home for at least two weeks - with no end date in sight.

It is thought 15 per cent of the total primaries across the country will stay shut, as Education Secretary Gavin Williams refused to apologise for the chaos today.

Teachers have also been left feeling anxious about returning to school, with one, Lauren, telling LBC she had lost hair and sleep at the prospect of going back to the classroom.
