New GOP Rep Lauren Boebert ‘can carry a concealed gun IN the Capitol’ after challenging Pelosi gun ban
INCOMING Republican Rep Lauren Boebert will be able to carry a gun in the Capitol building after challenging Nancy Pelosi on a potential gun ban.
Boebert, who will be sworn in as a representative for on Sunday, wrote a letter to the House on Friday urging them to let a 1967 rule allowing lawmakers to carry firearms in the Capitol stand.
Boebert, 33, claimed she needed to bring a gun into the building to protect herself, though some of her colleagues have pointed out that there are Capitol Police there for that exact purpose.
The to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy after 21 Democrats joined forces to urge the House leaders to get rid of to gun rule.
"I refuse to give up my Second Amendment rights. I’m a 5-foot tall, 100-pound mom with four children and will be walking to work and serving in one of the most dangerous cities in the US," Boebart said in a statement.
"I choose to defend my family and my life with all of the force the Constitution provides. I will not let a bunch of gun-grabbing House Democrats take away my Constitutional right to protect myself."
The letter sent by Democrats said that the gun rule creates "needless risk for Members of Congress, their staff, members of the Capitol Police, and visitors to the Capitol grounds."
Fellow Colorado Rep Jason Crow, a Democrat, accused Boebert of conducting a "political stunt" and "disrespecting the Capitol police."
Capitol Police protect the complex with over 2,300 officers and civilian employees, according to its website.
Still, Boebert's letter was signed by 82 current or incoming members of Congress.
The incoming representative appeared to be victorious, as issued new rules for the House on Saturday, which did not mention doing away with allowing lawmakers to carry weapons in the Capitol.
