Stansted airport runway closed as flights diverted

Planes were reportedly diverted to Luton or Birmingham

Stansted Airport

A RUNWAY closure at Stansted forced flights to the airport to be diverted tonight.

Planes were reportedly made to land at either Luton or Birmingham airport.

According to reports the closure was down to resurfacing works due to holes in the runway.

Shortly after 10pm this evening normal service had resumed.

The closure came just hours after the airport was evacuated when a fire alarm was triggered.

The alarm was investigated while passengers remained outside the airport building.

Twitter users shared photos online of the evacuation, with masses of people pictured outside the terminal.

Amanda Anastasopoulo, from Guildford, said everyone was told to get out of the building after the fire alarm was sounded.

Another passenger Sophie Lycouris tweeted a photo of crowds gathering outside the terminal.

A spokesman for Stansted airport said: “The fire alarm was triggered in a disabled toilet. The airport has now re-opened and passengers who were evacuated are back in the terminal.

“The airport is being evacuated due to some kind of alert.”

It came just hours after a terror attack at Atanturk airport in Istanbul.
