A Ford Transit van that had been travelling behind the Honda then smashed into the boy, who is described as being in a "serious but stable condition" at Manchester Royal Infirmary.

Police say the boy had to be placed in an induced coma after suffering a fractured skull, bleed to the brain and badly broken foot.

Officers from Greater Manchester Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward after the horror crash at around 7.10pm last night.

Constable Phillip Shaw, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "This was a serious collision that has left a little boy fighting for his life.

"We believe we have a good idea of what happened, but we know there were other people in the immediate vicinity at the time of the collision who have not yet come forward.
"It is vitally important they do so, so we can build a completely accurate picture of the events which led to this little lad being hurt."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 quoting incident number 050716/1959 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
