ALMOST 90,000 Muslims gathered in a single Birmingham park today to take part in the largest Eid celebration in Europe.
Record numbers of worshippers from across the globe descended on Small Heath Park to mark the end of Ramadan.
Following a religious month of dawn to dusk fasting, Eid is a single day that signals the end of Ramadan and the start of the next month, Shawwal.
Organisers said over 88,000 people attended this year's event - almost the capacity of London's Wembley Stadium.
Families - some who had travelled to Birmingham from as far as the USA - got to their knees in unison for morning prayers at 9am.
They then descending on the numerous games available - which included fairground rides, miniature golf and laser clay pigeon shooting.
The Celebrate Eid event is now in its sixth year and has seen its attendance skyrocket from just 12,000 people.
Waseem Khan, spokesperson for Green Lane Masjid & Community Centre, said preparations for the record-breaking event had been in planning for months.
He added: "We're overwhelmed by the turnout for this year's Celebrate Eid.
"Bringing together this many people from across our community, across different faiths, and from around the world to take part in the festivities is incredible.
"We've even welcomed families from as far as the United States to celebrate with us."
Labour councillor John Clancy, leader of Birmingham City Council, said: "Birmingham is great at celebrating.
"This is a huge celebration and a day of great joy, great excitement, great peace and great calm in the middle of the city here in Small Heath Park."
Ramadan is the holiest month in the Muslim calendar, where Muslims focus on personal reflection and prayer through three types of worship: charity, prayer and fasting.
It is followed by another two days of festivity for the global Muslim community, which numbers over 1.6 billion.
