SCHOOL HAIR ROW

Boy, 11, kicked out of class for having extreme short-back and sides

His mother says he was put in isolation after he was taken out of class

AN 11-year-old boy was put in isolation by his school for having a short hair cut, and his mum is furious.

Susan Meadows said she was left "appalled" and "incensed" after he was made to leave class for his change in hair style.

Her son Taylor was sporting a short back and side, a style favoured by the Army.

She claims he was put in isolation on Monday after a teacher at Havelock Academy in Grimsby noticed his hair was too short to meet the schools requirements.

Susan was called by a teacher at the school to let her know his haircut was "inappropriate", and according to his mum the Year 7 pupil was put in isolation.

She refused to take him to school on Tuesday in protest of the decision.

She said: "I do not think it is acceptable to punish him in this way. They have got their priorities wrong.

"It is unfair when he has not done anything wrong.

"They told me his haircut is affecting his school work, but it's got nothing to do with it."

Susan said she had no other option but to take him back to school yesterday as she does not want him to be punished anymore.

She also said Taylor will be forced to change his haircut in future. She claims his hair had been in the same style "since he was two years old" although the school has said when challenged, Taylor told them it was shorter than usual.

Deputy principal Darren Wood said: "Havelock Academy has uniform and behaviour policies that all students have to abide by. These set out the basic expectations that ensure that our school is a respectful learning environment, where students can focus on achieving their very best.

"These expectations are made clear to all students, as well as parents at our induction days.

"In this instance, a young person had a haircut that differed from their usual hairstyle. When we challenged the student, they said that the style they went for was shorter than usual, and they accepted that they had gone against academy policy.

Deputy principal Darren Wood said they deal with all pupils the same and so the treatment of Taylor was fair

"This is something that happens occasionally. When it does, students are put into our alternative provision for a period of up to a week. This ensures that they are able to still access all aspects of their education, while ensuring that the basic codes of the academy are still adhered to.

"All students are treated in the same way, so it would be incorrect to treat this individual differently to how other students have been treated in the past."
