When is the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee?

Princess Elizabeth became Queen on February 6, 1952 – the day her father King George VI died.

Therefore February 6, 2022, will mark 70 years on the throne.

However, the UK will celebrate Her Majesty’s 70th anniversary as monarch with a blockbuster weekend of celebrations in June 2022.

It is the first time any British monarch has reached this historic milestone.

Will the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee be a bank holiday?

Yes, in November 2020, Oliver Dowden announced “a four-day Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate The Queen’s 70-year reign”.

The May Bank Holiday Weekend will be moved to Thursday, June 2, 2022.

An additional Bank Holiday will take place on Friday, June 3, 2022.

It means there will be a four-day weekend to celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Will there be a Jubilee Medal?

The Jubilee medal will be created and awarded to public services workers.

In keeping with tradition the Platinum Jubilee medal will be awarded to people who work in public service including representatives of the Armed Forces, the emergency services and the prison services.

The traditions stretches back to the reign of Queen Victoria when an official medal was designed to mark her 50th anniversary on the throne.

Culture Secretary Dowden said: “Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee will be a truly historic moment – and one that deserves a celebration to remember.

“We can all look forward to a special, four-day Jubilee weekend, when we will put on a spectacular, once-in-a-generation show that mixes the best of British ceremonial splendour with cutting edge art and technology.

“It will bring the entire nation and the Commonwealth together in a fitting tribute.”

What celebrations are planned?

An extensive programme of public events will mix traditional pageantry with cutting edge technological displays.

On Thursday June 2, a big celebratory parade will take place, to honour The Queen’s birthday.

Members of the Royal Family will join 1,400 soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians, parading down The Mall on horseback, while The Queen watches from the Buckingham Palace balcony.

Following the tradition, beacons will be lit throughout the UK, and for the first time, in each capital of the Commonwealth countries.

On Friday, June 3, a service of Thanksgiving will be held at St Paul’s Cathedral, to celebrate The Queen’s time on the throne.

The next day on Saturday, June 4, Her Majesty and some members of the Royal Family will attend the Derby at Epsom Downs.

After, the BBC will bring special celebrity guests to the Buckingham Palace for a celebratory concert, which will be broadcasted live.

The event will be open to members of the public, selected by a special ballot.

On the last day of the four-day holiday, Friday, June 5, the annual Big Lunch will bring the Jubilee celebrations close to every community, encouraging neighbours to come together for street parties, picnics and barbecues.

Unlike the Diamond Jubilee in 2012 – when the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the rest of the royal family endured an extremely wet and windy trip down the Thames – there will be no river pageant planned.

However, a pageant will see over 5,000 people gather outside Buckingham Palace, for a music and street arts-fuelled fest.

People across the nation will also be invited to plant a tree for the Platinum Jubilee.

The campaign, known as The Queen’s Green Canopy, will launch in May, 2021.
