The event involves bulls getting carried through the streets with fireworks on them, as well as a “flaming bull” which is a bovine-shaped device which spouts sparks at revellers.

So far, according to the Spanish Red Cross, several people have been gored.

In one TV clip a runner was stopping a bull from goring a woman and a man who was on the ground.

When the bull run commenced on Thursday morning it was only moments after the start when several animals got separated from the pack.

Over a thousand people took part and it went on for twice as long this year – lasting six minutes.

Bulls weighed between 530 and 650 kilograms (1,170-1,430 pounds) at Friday's run.

The Red Cross, assists those who are injured and said six participants were gored, which was an initial hospital reports of five gorings.

It said on its Twitter account eight other people were taken to hospitals to be treated for other injuries sustained from the run.

One person who was injured was a 35-year-old Brit, who had treatment for light injuries at a city hospital.

A 58-year-old man from Pamplona and a 73-year-old South African were being treated for serious injuries.

The fiesta was made famous by the novel The Sun Also Rises, which was written by Ernest Hemingway in 1926.

It lasts for nine days and  attracts thousands of visitors.

The runners run with six bulls down a narrow street to the city’s bull ring.

The animals then face matadors in the ring, and most often die.

In all, 15 people have died from being gored by bulls since 1924 when they started to keep records.
