He had left his medals on a kitchen work surface to clean approximately two hours earlier, but when he returned they had vanished.

It is thought someone entered the back door while he was out.

Avon and Somerset Police are appealing for information following the sick burglary.

Among the collection was a bronze 3945 star, a bronze France and Germany star and a police long service medal, all engraved with his name, the regimental number 2666006 and 5th Battalion Coldstream Guards.

A silver and green French d'Honneur medal and a black wallet with gold lettering in the bottom right corner were also taken.

The National Order of the Legion of Honour was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 and is the highest decoration in France.

Anyone who has information about the burglary or medals should call police on 101 quoting reference 5216151507.
