Who is the man Theresa May calls her ‘rock’

May to become Britain's newest Prime Minister by the end of the week

HE is the man who will support Britain's newest Prime Minister in his newest role of the so-called 'First Husband'.

Philip May is the man who Theresa May described as her "rock" after the pair met while studying at Oxford University - but he will now be more important than ever in his role to support the incoming Prime Minister.

While May has rarely discussed her private life with her husband, she opened up about him in a recent episode of Desert Island Discs.

She said he was  a "huge support", saying "He was a real rock for me".

The couple met at a Conservative Party disco while studying at Oxford, with the pair marrying on September 6 1980.

He particularly supported her in the four years after their marriage when May lost both her father and her mother a short time later.

Her father, Rev Braiser, was killed in a road traffic crash in 1981, dying from serious head and spinal injuries.

Her mother, Zaidee, died after battling multiple sclerosis, leaving May without her parents at just 25-years-old.

Mr May has gone on from his university years to become a successful banker, working as a fund manager at de Zoete & Bevan and Prudential Portfolio Managers UK. Since 2005, he has worked as a Relationship Manager at Capital Group.

The pair are now taking on their biggest challenge yet after May was announced to be the next Prime Minister of Britain, taking up the mantle left by David Cameron.

Mr May follows in the footsteps of Margaret Thatcher's husband, Denis Thatcher.
