B&Q LOST IN TRANSLATION

Shoppers confused by huge Welsh sign saying store was closing and nearest one was in UNITED STATES

B&Q mistranslated the word 'us' for 'US' - leading the Welsh version of the sign to read 'you can find us at USA'

DIY shoppers were shocked to be told their nearest B&Q was 5,000 MILES away after their local hardware store closed.

Confused customers were left bemused after a Welsh language blunder led them to believe the store had relocated in the USA.

Shoppers who turned up at the Aberysthwyth brance of B&Q were confused to find they would need a trip across the pond for any future home improvements.

The company had erected a banner on the closed store at the Parc-y-llyn Retail Park in Llanbadarn letting customers know where the nearest store is after the branch shut down earlier this year.

However a mix-up with their Welsh translation seemed to suggest a transatlantic flight would be needed to pick up any DIY goods.

The poster read “Rydym wedi symud”, which is Welsh for “we have moved” – so far so good.

But it was then followed by the phrase “Dod oh hyd at Unol daleithiau”, which translates as “You can find at United States”.

It seems the company mistakenly translated the word “us” into the Welsh word for “US” – an abbreviation of “United States”.

The company has apologised for the error and said the misleading banner will be removed and replaced.

A B&Q spokesperson said: “We’re sorry for any confusion caused by the mistake in our sign and we’re working to get it removed. You won’t be able to find the United States at

The B&Q store, which was a victim of severe flooding shortly after it opened in 2012, closed down earlier this year.

The nearest B&Q store to Aberystwyth since the branch’s closure is not in America but in Carmarthen, Wales.
