The facilities assistant told the: “To me it looks well worn. This wasn’t someone who brushed their teeth in the shop quickly.

"I think someone has come in and slyly changed it over which is a bit cheeky. It put me off buying a toothbrush.”

Mr Laws decided to place his stomach-churning picture on Facebook - and the post received more than 1,000 shares in less than a day as users branded the culprit “disgusting”.

Karolina Oseckyte posted: “That's disgusting level 2000000.”

Connie Gurney wrote: "Exchange is no robbery" apparently.... LOL... ewwww.... the filthy toe rag.”

While Maximillian Mann added: “I'd love to meet the person who is both so into dental care that they need to regularly exchange the brush, but absolutely refuses to pay 50p or whatever it costs for a cheap toothbrush.

"That is someone I would like to exchange a pint with.”

Mr Laws said he felt bad he didn’t report the used display head to customer services, adding he would raise it with staff during his next shop.

A spokesman for Sainsbury's said: "Product quality is always a priority.

"In this instance the toothbrush head on the display model has clearly been swapped. We're investigating."
