Is Prince Edward the Duke of Edinburgh?

The title of Duke of Edinburgh will be inherited by Prince Philip's youngest son Prince Edward, now King Charles is on the throne.

King Charles inherited his father’s title - Duke of Edinburgh - on the day of his father's passing.

Prince Philip was granted the title on the day of his wedding to Queen Elizabeth on November 20, 1947.

As King Charles takes the throne, following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, he will give up the title he has held since April 2021.

Now the title of Duke of Edinburgh will be inherited by Prince Philip's youngest son Prince Edward.

Why is King Charles not the Duke of Edinburgh?

King Charles inherited the title in keeping with royal custom when his father passed away.

It will now be passed on to Prince Edward in line with his father's wishes.

In 1999, Buckingham Palace announced that Edward would succeed his father in the dukedom with the blessing of the Queen and Prince Philip.

Now Charles has acceded to the throne, the title will merge with the crown - meaning the new King can grant Edward the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Edward, who is currently the Earl of Wessex, has already taken a number of his father’s patronages.

He is a trustee of the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme and a patron of the Edinburgh International Festival.

It also means that Edward’s wife the Countess of Wessex will become the Duchess of Edinburgh - a title once held by the Queen.

What does the Duke of Edinburgh title mean and what is the role?

The title has been created three times for members of the Royal Family since 1726.

It was first given to Prince Frederick by his grandfather King George I.

Over a century later, Queen Victoria created the title in 1866 for her second son Prince Alfred.

It is a substantive title - meaning it is acquired either by inheritance or individual grant.

The Duke of Edinburgh was president, patron or member of over 780 organisations.

Who has been given the Duke of Edinburgh title?

King Charles will make brother Edward the Duke of Edinburgh.

The Earl of Wessex has waited for more than two decades to inherit his late father’s title

Former Buckingham Palace press officer Dickie Arbiter has weighed in on the row after it was reported Charles would not give the title to Edward.

He said Charles was simply waiting, and has no plans to defy his parents' specific wishes.

Arbiter said: "That Prince Edward will become The Duke of Edinburgh in the next reign was his father's and is his mother's wishes and Prince Charles won't go against those.

"It won't happen immediately, but by 2029, when Edward turns 65, it will.

"Time for speculation, without substance, to cease."
