Honolulu shooting – Naval officer kills himself in hotel room after firing at cops through door during 10-hour siege

A NAVAL officer has killed himself after barricading himself in his hotel room and firing at cops through the door during a 10-hour siege at a resort in Hawaii.

The guest, believed to be a local military man, forced the hotel into lockdown on Saturday night as police evacuated more than 100 people from the Kahala Hotel & Resort in Honolulu.

The standoff ended early on Sunday when the gunman fatally shot himself, according to KITV.

Shots first rang out at around 6PM on Saturday as police began removing people from the beach and beachfront eateries, fearing he could fire from his hotel balcony.

Resort guests huddled in a makeshift safety room in a ballroom.

The gunman was suspected to be a member of the Navy who lives on Oahu, with his military commander responding to the scene in addition to members of his family.

Police say the man first fired through his fourth-floor door when a hotel security staffer knocked on his door, although it was unclear why the security personnel was called up to the gunman's room.

"Thankfully, the security guard wasn’t standing in front of the door," Honolulu police Capt. Brian Lynch told

Following the initial round, the man fired through the door multiple times just as officers began calling his name.

Police say the man fired at least five rounds as negotiators tried to end the standoff.

"Nobody is injured. Everybody is accounted for," Lynch said. "We’re just waiting for the suspect to give up."

Officials said the suspect was believed to have been staying at the resort with his family, who were not with him as he barricaded himself in the room and are in a safe place.

The resort issued a statement late Saturday night as the lockdown continued into the early Sunday morning hours.

"This evening, an individual with a firearm barricaded himself in one of the guest rooms at The Kahala."

"Our security personnel and law enforcement have evacuated guests and employees from the immediate area and everyone is sheltering in place."
