Donald Trump formally named Republican party US presidential candidate to take on Hillary Clinton
The billionaire businessman and reality star secured the number of votes needed after a tumultuous year long campaign
DONALD Trump has been formally nominated as the Republican’s candidate to run for president of the United States.
The billionaire businessman superseded the 1237 majority necessary to secure his chance at running for the White House on Tuesday evening.
He was officially announced in a five and a half minute long speech at the Republican National Convention in Ohio, Cleveland.
Trump got the number of delegates to clinch the nomination in May but it was made official by the vote.
He formally took control as delegates officially chose him ending his tumultuous year long political battle to secure the position.
The state of New York cast their delegates for Trump just after 7pm, and he was given the majority.
His son Donald Trump Jr revealed the number of delegates, saying: “It is my honour to throw Donald Trump over the top with 89 delegates, congratulations Dad, we love you.”
The call also crushed those anti-protesters who have been vocal in their anger at his possible nomination.
Reacting to his victory, Trump tweeted: “Such a great honor to be the Republican Nominee for President of the United States.
“I will work hard and never let you down! AMERICA FIRST!"
Speaking after the nomination his daughter Ivanka said: "It's unbelievable, it's surreal, I am so proud of my father."
Trump won the position taking on 16 candidates who stood against him to win the role of nominee.
He easily saw off rivals John Kasich and Ted Cruz, who suspended his campaign in May.
Throughout his campaign, calls to build a wall between Mexico and the US, and his threats to ban all Muslims have caused controversy.
Trump was set to take to the podium later in the evening at the RNC, which started on Monday.
His running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, will accept his role in a speech on Wednesday.
The RNC got off to a chaotic start when anti-Trump protesters tried to stop a rules package going through on Monday, and called for a role call vote so they could air their grievances about the former reality star being able to run as the candidate.
They failed in their attempt which caused much jeering and cat calling from the floor of the venue.
Meanwhile outside their was a police presence of over 5,000 officers - open gun carry supporters wore their weapons in full view, and Black Lives Matter protesters as well as anti-Trump protesters led to a heightened atmosphere.
Then on Monday night Trump's wife Melania gave a speech and was immediately criticised with calls she had used language similar one given by Michelle Obama in 2008.
The Trump campaign said allegations of plagarism were absurd and Melania had worked with a speech writer.
