North Wales Police has now referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, a spokeswoman confirmed.

Police were called to the road where Emma lived shortly after 4am on Monday morning after someone reported screams.

But Emma – who had a two-year-old son Steffan – was not found until 10.45am in the garden of her home in the village of Penygroes, Wales.

A police statement said: “Officers were deployed to the locality but found nothing suspicious in the area.

“However the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission."

A spokesman for the IPCC told : “We have received a referral this afternoon from North Wales Police and are currently assessing it.”

Speaking on Tuesday Detective Superintendent Iestyn Davies said: “The investigation team are of the view that the woman died during the early hours of yesterday morning.”

A man and woman arrested yesterday evening in connection with the investigation into the murder continue to be questioned by detectives.

Today Detective Superintendent Davies added: “ Additional high visibility patrols are in place in Penygroes to help reassure the community.

“I am particularly interested in the movements of a black coloured 3 door Ford Fiesta car which I believe travelled between the villages of Trefor and Penygroes between 2am and 2.30am on Monday morning and returned to the Trefor area between 4am and 4.30am.”

In an appeal for witnesses police said they were particularly keen to hear from anyone who heard a disturbance in the area between 2am and 5am on Monday.

They said: "Officers have already had a positive response from the community, with several reports being received of a female screaming at around 4am in the vicinity of the address."

Tributes have been paid to mum-of-one Emma, who was described as “the life and soul in any situation”.

Her mum Amanda said: “She was my best friend and a beloved daughter, mother, partner and sister who had a heart of gold and would do anything for anybody. She was always the life and soul in any situation.”

Amanda added: “I am so lost without her and she will be forever in our thoughts and prayers. She will always be in our hearts forever and always. Love you Emma. Always and forever.”
