BIRTHDAY BEHIND BARS

Death row gran Lindsay Sandiford smiles despite looming execution as she celebrates 60th birthday in Bali jail

She was given cake and pizza and was visited in prison by friends

CONVICTED Brit smuggler Lindsay Sandiford celebrated her 60th birthday in jail with cake and pizza - as her execution looms.

Sandiford was arrested in 2012 in Bali, after arriving at Denpasar Airport on a flight from Thailand, and was found in possession of 4.7kg of cocaine.

Despite her seemingly bleak future, she was able raise a smile to celebrate her birthday with a couple of friends inside her jail cell, complete with a personal cake.

The Gran, from Redcar, Teesside has always maintained she was carrying it for her son who was being threatened for his life.

Indonesia has a hard line on drug smugglers and prioritises them for execution.

The Justice for Lindsay Sandiford Facebook page posted: "We are delighted to let you see some of the pictures from Lindsay's 60th birthday in Bali last weekend.

"A warm thank you to the staff and officers of Kerobokan for allowing this moving event to go ahead.

"Your care and kindness to Lindsay has been remarkable.

"Surrounded by a few close friends, Lindsay enjoyed pizza, a specially inscribed blueberry cheesecake from a local bakery, and drinks - but soft drinks only, of course.

"It was a wonderful opportunity for some of the prisoners closest to Lindsay to celebrate her milestone birthday."

Since being sentenced to death by firing squad in January 2013, the Brit has appealed and attempted to overturn her conviction.

She has also urged the Foreign Office to intervene - it says it is providing 'consular assistance'.

Last year Indonesia announced it would be halting executions, a temporary move while it "focused on the economy" instead.

However, it has been reported that the country is planning a series of executions later this summer.

In recent years it has mainly been foreigners who have met their fate.

Sandiford is not thought to be on the initial list, yet the resumption of the killings is an ominous sign.
