Brennan's father, Terry, told ESPN his son was discovered in a hotel room unconscious the day he died.
He said the former quarterback had "ingested something laced with fentanyl."
Earlier that day, Brennan attempted to go to a detox program but was unable to secure a spot due to the lack of beds available.
"He was really into it," Terry told about the detox program.
"It involved a lot of physical activity and he liked it. He was working with soldiers who had come back from Afghanistan and Iraq with similar problems."
His father added: "He was doing quite well with it for four months. Then something happened and he went to the dark side, and it was just not good."
On September 17, 2021, reported that Brennan died of an accidental overdose.
According to a toxicology report, the athlete had ingested fentanyl and other dangerous substances, which ultimately led to his death.
Methamphetamine, amphetamine, and ethanol were also found in his system.
It is unclear if Brennan had a prescription for any of the drugs aforementioned.
Brennan had allegedly struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for several years.
He was arrested on July 25, 2012, in Kailua, Hawaii, on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and possession of a dangerous drug.
A month later, he was arrested again for drunk driving and was also found with a plastic bag that allegedly showed elements of cocaine residue.
The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors tweeted tributes to Brennan, with current head coach Todd Graham saying, "The Hawaii football program is deeply saddened by the news of Colt Brennan passing. A great Warrior legend, rest in aloha."
According to a tweet by The Atlantic, Hawaii football will wear a decal of Brennan's jersey number on their helmets this season to honor his life.
The decals will debut Saturday when Hawaii takes on UCLA.
