Girl, 16, killed and four other youngsters injured after shocking crash in early hours

A TEENAGE girl was killed in a crash which has devastated her family and left four others injured.

Chloe Cockton, 16, was a passenger in the car when it collided with a pedestrian barrier.

The crash happened in Rochdale, in Greater Manchester, at about 2.20am on Sunday.

The young woman suffered fatal injuries and and was declared dead shortly after arriving in hospital.

The 19-year-old driver of the car is in hospital after he sustained serious head injuries.

Two female passengers, aged 17 and a boy, 16, are also in hospital.

Police have formally identified Chloe, but her family were too devastated to speak about the tragedy yesterday.

Emergency services closed the road for more than three hours after the crash.

Dozens of cards and flowers were left at the scene.

Yesterday Chloe's friends left messages on her Facebook page.

One person wrote: "Too young. Was such a lovely girl and I hope God looks after you up there. Fly high gorgeous."

Another wrote: "Sooo beautiful!!!! Love you so much gunna miss you like mad!! Things aren't  gunna be the same."

Police investigating the smash believe a black Hackney cab was present at the scene and are appealing to the driver to come forward .

PC Neil Pennington from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “This has been a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of Chloe at this distressing time.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have been at the scene, particularly the driver of the black cab, or anyone who saw the Renault Clio moments before the collision to come forward.”

Witnesses who may have seen the collision to contact police as soon as possible on 0161 856 4745, 101, or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
