THE body of a 13-year-old boy has been pulled from a river in Yorkshire hours after he went missing while swimming with friends on the hottest day of the year.

The lad vanished below the water after getting into difficulty in the River Calder at Brighouse, West Yorkshire, on Tuesday afternoon.

Temperatures yesterday reached a scorching 25.7C - with the area in Brighouse seeing the mercury hit 22C on Tuesday afternoon.

A search and rescue operation was launched but was called off hours later after police found the body.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police and partner agencies were called at 2.38pm today to reports of a child who had been playing with friends and got into difficulties in the River Calder.

"An urgent search was conducted by specialist fire service colleagues and police.

"Tragically, the body of a 13-year-old boy was recovered."

Chief Superintendent Sarah Blake said: "We are continuing our enquiries.

"While investigations into what took place are at an early stage, indications are that this is a tragic incident in which a teenage boy has lost his life.

"Specially-trained officers are working to support the victim's family at this devastating time, and our thoughts are with them."

She urged anyone with information to contact police urgently on 101 quoting police log 989 of June 1.

Dozens of children were reportedly playing near the water today on their half-term break from school.

A witness spotted a group of young lads trying to get into the river - before being restrained by police.

Tributes to the young lad have been left at the bridge close to where the boy drowned.

Friends and locals came to pay their respects to the teenager after he drowned.

It comes after divers pulled the body of a missing schoolboy from the River Thames.

The youngster disappeared while swimming over the bank holiday.

Rescue teams had been scouring water between Bourne End, Bucks and Cookham, Berks after the teen went missing.

But tragically, the 13-year-old's body was found in the early hours of this morning.

Meanwhile, a woman's body was pulled from the water in Maidenhead, Berks yesterday.

Police are probing the unexplained death. The woman was found at Boulters Lock at 7.15am.

The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service tweeted over the weekend: "We know it might be tempting, but please do not use open water such as rivers, lakes and canals to cool off.

"You have no idea what is below the surface and cold water shock can kill."
