Their research found the needs of 33 per cent of ‘the military family’ are not met by conventional insurers.

Frequent house moves, failure to cover accidents on deployment and postings overseas are the main woes affecting tens of thousands of serving troops.

But now The Military Mutual – in which customers are members – is challenging the big insurers with a range of made to measure services for soldiers, sailors and airmen.

The business is open not just to current personnel but now anyone with a relative who has served - which could be as many as 20million Brits.

Former Major-General Sir Sebastian Roberts, chairman of the Military Mutual, said: “For too long servicemen and their families have faced a far from level playing field.

“We have a strap line which is better values, better value, and we really do believe that by focusing on military values we feel you can deliver value.

“And if you’re not just chasing the money but instead really working on behalf of the members to give them what they deserve you can produce something special.”
