Diabetes could be treated with £1 energy drink within just THREE YEARS
British scientists unveil potentially life-changing treament for people living with long term disease
An energy drink which costs just £1 could soon be used to treat people with type 2 diabetes, it has been claimed.
Boffins from the University of Oxford have been testing out a drink that's designed to help US soldiers keep their energy levels up whilst on the battlefield.
The beverage is called "G" and contains ketones, which are acids produced by the body when it goes into a state of starvation.
It could be on offer in the UK within just three years.
Dr Kieran Clarke, a biochemist at the university, told The Times: "The idea began as a way to treat patients.
"Ketone is hugely beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes because it helps to lower fatty acid levels in the blood.
"The drink could be taken alongside a low-sugar diet to help manage the condition."
A trial organised by the University of Oxford found that cyclists who quaffed a bottle of G were able to cycle quarter of a mile further in half an hour than their un-enhanced competitors.
Ketones are made in the liver by breaking down the body's supply of fat, something which happens when starvation is setting in.
The drink G has already been licensed for sale in America and its likely to be given the go-ahead to be sold in the UK soon too.
