THE NEW "Delta Plus" Covid variant "more transmissible" than the original has been detected in the UK with 41 cases being monitored.

Delta Plus has been found in nine other countries - USA, India, Portugal, Switzerland, Japan, Poland, Nepal, Russia and China.

PHE is not calling it "Delta Plus", and said the World Health Organisation is considering it simply part of Delta, but is monitoring the cases.

Brits will find out crucial updates to the green and amber travel lists tomorrow - and quarantine-free holidays to Spain, Greece and Italy could be back on by August.

Covid cases in the UK today jumped by 16,135 - the highest number of new infections in almost five months.

The total number of cases since the pandemic began now stands at 4,667,870.

  • SURGE IN COVID-19 CASES IN BLACKBURN HAS PEAKED

The surge in Covid-19 cases in Blackburn with Darwen looks to have peaked, with case rates stabilising for the first time in over a month, new figures suggest.

A total of 897 coronavirus cases were recorded in the local authority in the seven days to June 10 – the equivalent of 599.2 cases per 100,000 people.

Although this is up week-on-week from 548.4, it is below the figure of 666.7 recorded for the seven days to June 7, which was the highest for the area since the middle of January.

Since June 7, the seven-day rate of new cases has dropped on each successive day.

The figures have been calculated by the PA news agency from Public Health England data.

  • ALL OVER-18s LIKELY TO BE ABLE TO BOOK THEIR COVID JAB BY END OF THE WEEK

Sir Simon Stevens, chief executive of the NHS in England, said that all adults in England should be able to book their Covid-19 jab “by the end of this week”.

He told the NHS Confederation annual conference that the NHS would “finish the job” of the Covid-19 vaccination programme to the “greatest extent possible” over the next four weeks.

Sir Simon said: “It is now very important that we use the next four weeks to finish the job to the greatest extent possible for the Covid vaccination programme, which has been a historic signature achievement in terms of the effectiveness of delivering by the NHS – over 60 million doses now administered.

“By July 19 we aim to have offered perhaps two thirds of adults across the country double jabs.

“And we’re making great strides also in extending the offer to all adults – today people aged 23 and 24 are able to vaccinate through the National Booking Service.

“I expect that by the end of this week, we’ll be able to open up the National Booking Service to all adults age 18 and above.

“Of course, vaccine supply continues to be constrained, so we’re pacing ourselves at precisely the rate of which we’re getting that extra vaccine supply between now and July 19.”

  • LOCKDOWN MOB

The political editor of BBC’s Newnight was chased into Downing Street by anti-lockdown campaigners as a protest through central London turned ugly yesterday.

Nicholas Watt was surrounded by a baying mob who called him a “c***” and blocked his path as he tried to escape.

He was first captured on video walking quickly through Whitehall near police in high-vis jackets.

In the footage, the journalist – who wore a blue BBC lanyard around his neck – was then followed closely by a man wearing a leather waistcoat and a blonde woman in a minidress who pointed their fingers at him.

Watt, who wore a blue face mask, then turned to escape their path – only for a crowd of around 15 to chase him across a road.
