Sun readers made the right call on Brexit — our best days definitely lie ahead
UK’s rebirthday
FIVE years ago today Britain, and a majority of Sun readers, made a momentous decision. Already, just 17 months after we finally left the EU, we have been vindicated.
Leavers were warned of a tsunami of job losses, of business flight, a wrecked economy and a collapse in house prices if we dared break free.
Project Fear was bad enough. Then came the Remainer trolls. They branded Leave voters thick, old, white racists. If we left, the world would loathe Britain.
Every word was false. Some 17.4million people knew it and on June 23, 2016, voted — in that memorable phrase — to take back control. And so we have, with huge success even in these early months:
An EU trade deal Remainers branded “impossible”. Scores of EU-era deals replicated or improved. A brand new one with Australia. Now talks have begun on joining the CPTPP, a massive international trading partnership.
We went our own way on Covid jabs, developing, approving and rolling them out far faster than Brussels. The EU response? Panic, spite and vengeful bullying, exposing fatal flaws in its values and judgment as well as its structure.
Brexit has had other positives. We control our immigration and can turn away foreign criminals. We axed the hated tampon tax, impossible in the EU.
Not everything has gone right. Fishing arrangements are far from ideal. The Northern Ireland protocol is being undermined by Brussels’ petty need to salvage a “win”.
But most Brits now want Brexit to succeed and Boris Johnson to ensure it.
He is lucky in his foes. Labour, incredibly, just appointed a new Brexit chief: a diehard Remainer who backed a second referendum then lost her Red Wall seat.
Sun readers, though, made the right call on Brexit. And if the Government is bold, our best days definitely lie ahead.
Labour’s lost
YOU need a long memory to recall Labour as the party of the working class.
It is now for middle-class graduates seduced by woke memes.
When their divisive mantra about “white privilege” is criticised in a serious education report which reveals the dire plight of white working-class pupils, who do Labour MPs back?
The woke mob. Not the poor kids.
Labour must truly believe they have “privilege” to fall back on.
Hols gloom
WHY must the Government wait till August to deign to allow quarantine-free holidays for the double-jabbed?
What justification is there, if we really are reopening on July 19? If the dates are pushed back again, the summer and school holidays will be gone.
